Becoming a Nurse Injector

An On and Off Label Approach to Injectables

The most seasoned plastic surgeons and sought after injectors can attest to the importance of training and innovation.

As the aesthetics field continues to flourish, a good injector will be up-to-date with the latest on-label and off-label procedures, the newest fillers on the market, and proper protocols for handling an adverse reaction.

Luckily, there is a multitude of ways you can perfect your technique and learn from the best. In recent years, the idea of shadowing expert injectors has started to fade. Many physicians like myself offer in person, one on one shadowing to other injectors.

Is there an injector that you admire on Instagram or Youtube? Are you eager to learn a new off-label procedure that seems to be taking off? Reach out to the provider or visit their website to see if they offer any form of training! Even if they don't have it listed on their website, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Whether you're an advanced injector or just starting out, attending conferences, group training, and seminars is another great way to gain pearls of wisdom. My in-person conference provides attendees with a unique learning experience and an opportunity to network with injectors beginning to advance.

What Every Nurse Injector Needs

One of the most valuable resources you will have as an injector will be shared knowledge from your colleagues and peers. It is never a bad idea to ask for help or reach out to another injector for advice.

Online courses and webinars are other resources that have gained popularity in recent years. You should never have to put off perfecting your technique or learning new tricks because of a busy schedule or personal life. While many of the major pharmaceutical companies offer online training, what so many of them lack is a personable approach to aesthetics.

I created the Modern Aesthetic Theory & Artistry Online Learning Portal as a tool accessible to injectors across the globe, in the comfort of their own home, and available 24/7. My online course gives members an inside look at my signature on-label and off-label injectable techniques provide injectors with step-by-step video demonstrations, and contains a library of articles and resources carefully curated for our members!

As a facial plastic surgeon and key opinion leader, my innate passion for aesthetics and love for teaching others empowered me to create something very unique for injectors at every level. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, there is something for every injector in this invaluable learning portal.

Attain an Aesthetic Nurse Specialist Certification

Want to land your dream job or increase your credibility with patients? Naturally, proper licensure from the state or country you will be practicing in is vital. The Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB) is one of the first places a nurse injector should look to. Upon taking an exam and completing two years as a nurse working in plastic surgery, dermatology, ENT, or ophthalmology practice you can become a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS). This type of certification is something future employers and patients might look for in an injector.

A number of pharmaceutical companies like Allergan, Galderma, and Merz offer their provider's group training opportunities and specialized training that certify you as an injector trained to work with their specific product(s). Programs like Galderma's GAIN offer aesthetics providers opportunities for specialized training with key opinion leaders and certified GAIN trainers like Dr. Kay.

Courses like the Modern Aesthetic Theory & Artistry Online Learning Portal are valuable resources that enable injectors to gain an understanding of multiple products like neurotoxins without having to undergo individualized training.

Setting Realistic Expectations with Injectables Patients

As a certified aesthetics injector, it is important to promise realistic expectations. Upon listening to your patient’s concerns and desired outcomes, you should work with your patient to create a treatment plan that realistically addresses their beauty goals.

Take the time to consult with a patient and determine whether or not they are in the appropriate headspace, understand the procedure, and clearly lay out realistic expectations and possible adverse reactions. Carving out an ample amount of time to go over these things could save you the heartache in the long-term.

The Art of the Anatomy

Whenever I meet a patient, I try to assess the face the way similar to how a sculptor would approach a new masterpiece. Looking at the face with this approach will allow you to carefully refine your beautiful patient’s facial features and create a customized treatment plan that fits their needs.

Part of setting realistic expectations for your patients will rely on your artistic and meticulous eye for detail. It takes years of experience to be able to assess a patient’s individual needs.

Proper training will help injectors understand the facial features and determine what treatments and products can help your patient(s) look their absolute best!

Why every nurse injector should build their own brand
Whether you are just starting out or consider yourself a seasoned aesthetics injector, building and retaining your clientele will rely heavily on your brand, social media presence, and credibility.

Are you on Instagram? Do you currently have a website? What type of reviews do your patients leave for you? It all can be quite overwhelming and you aren’t required to be on every social media channel. However, knowing where your online presence stands is a vital part of being successful.

The image of your brand is important and should represent who you are as a person and the message that you want to send to potential clients. At a minimum, social media accounts should have your phone number, website, and credentials.
